I don't have a very elaborate box of tools. For the most part I stick to the basics in my sewing box. There are so many brands and types of scissors and pins out there, I wanted to take a quick second to share my recommendations for a basic set of essentials.
- Fiskers 5" Softouch Spring Action Scissors - $13.44 / I always keep these snips handy when quilting or sewing. They are great for trimming up threads or even as a seam ripper in an emergency.
- Dritz 1-3/4" Extra Long Pins - $9.43 / I prefer long pins. I just find them easier to use. And I love these because they come in a box (since I'm ALWAYS losing mine) and they are yellow... which is awesome.
- Moleskine Classic Notebook with Grid Lines - $15.59 / I try to keep a notebook handy on my desk for scratching down ideas and plotting out patterns. This Moleskine has gridded pages which makes it perfect for sewing and crafting.
- Olfa Standard Rotary Cutter - $17.27 / I have been using a cheap rotary cutter for years. I recently upgraded to this model and love it.
- Dritz Magnetic Seam Guide - $7.65 / This little thing is a lifesaver. In a perfect world I would use a piecing foot all the time, but sometimes I'm too lazy to switch it out and this little tool is so quick to use. One of my favorite tricks.
- Gingher Goldhandle Knife Edge Scissors - $31.26 / A good pair of scissors is one of your most important tools. Invest and maintain them and they will last a lifetime.
- Fons & Porter Pincushion - $8.89 / Every sewer needs a pincushion (or 10). This one is adorable. Of course there are also hundreds of DIY tutorials out there to make your own too.
