Garden Checklist 2014

I THINK we are done with the snow (knock on wood).  Everything is starting to wake up.  This weekend we are planning to give our yard and garden some much-needed love.

This year we are winging it a little.  I forgot to order seeds.  We never know what our favorite nursery is going to have in stock until we get there.  We have talked about some ideas and have a tentative wishlist.
  • In the edible garden we are going to pick up seeds locally for beans, peas, sunflowers and maybe corn again.  As usual we will be picking up seedlings for herds at a hole-in-the-wall nursery near our home.  We are hoping to do a variety of peppers in our large raised bed this year to see if they do better than they usually do in our large buckets.
  • In the front yards we will be finishing the beds under the front window.  Last year we planted 4 large hydrangeas and transplanted some plants from my Grandma's yard in the fall.  We wanted to let them start rooting.  This spring we will edge the bed and add mulch.  This fall I will add some blubs for more color next year.
  • I would love to get a quote on rebuilding our front steps.  They have been disintegrating for years and a family of chipmunks have made their home inside the cinder-block.  We added some large concrete pots, which helped dress them up, but they could look so much better.
  • We need to spend some quality time with our hedges.  Now that there are less of them we need to shape the ones that are left.
  • We need to redistribute the gravel in the driveway and fill in some low spots.
  • If anyone in Northeast Ohio is looking for fresh mint in bulk, shoot me an email (eversosplendid@gmail.com).  Once June gets here I will be cutting it back and tossing it every week.  Our chocolate mint and pineapple mint grows faster than we can give it away.  It makes delicious and refreshing mint tea.
  • I think my roses are dead.  I was negligent and forgot to winterize them.  I'm so sad.  I may wait to replace them until we are in our next house and have a proper yard.
I think that's all.  It's a much lighter list than last year.  I'm excited to get started and can't wait to see all our new additions from last year (peach tree, hydrangea, hellebores, coral bells, etc) start to grow.
