Pattern Review / Butterick B5613 Skirt

Butterick B5613 Skirt Review on Ever So Splendid
I was finally able to snap some photos of my last sewing project.  As you may remember, I am on a mission to learn to sew from a pattern.  I've had some ups and downs throughout the process, but I'm improving with every project.  I'm pretty thrilled with this one and have already started something new that should be ready to share soon!

On to the review!  After my success (though not perfect) with M5094 a month or so ago, I wanted to tackle a skirt and master gathering.  Butterick B5613 seemed like a perfect introduction to both.  I was able to get it on sale for $3.99.  It's out of print but you can still find it on Amazon in Size AA (6-12) and E5 (14-22).  Your local shop might still have some in stock as well.  It comes with 4 versions of a very simple knee length skirt, some gathered and some pleated.  It's from their Fast & Easy line so it's great for beginners.

I  purchased a couple of yards of Amy Butler's Tapestry Rose for this project.  It's beautiful and sews really nicely.  I did skirt and sash A, which is a gathered rectangle skirt with a waistband and sash.  The skirt is unlined, but has enough volume that I wouldn't recommend adding a lining.  It came together very quickly and I found the directions to be clear and thorough.  You do need a little interfacing for the waistband (don't skip it, it is important).  It's great for practicing and learning gathering.  I LOVE the pockets.  They were so easy and came out look so clean and professional.

You could easily add a little fun to an otherwise simple skirt by putting a different pattern in the hidden pockets. You could also mix it up by doing a contrasting waistband and sash.  This skirt would look great in just about any fabric.  You could go for so many different looks by using a stiffer or softer material, adding length or shortening or using a border print.

It ended up being too large for me (something I'll be adjusting), so be wary of that when measuring before cutting.  The sash helps cinch it in a little.

I've worn this skirt a few times already.  It's so much fun to mix with different colors on top.  It can be dressed up or down by wearing it with a simple white tee and some sandals or by adding heels and a chiffon blouse.

If you have any questions about this pattern, please feel free to leave a comment and I will try to answer them as best as I can.  I highly recommend this pattern for beginners and advanced sewers alike.  I'll be trying the pleated version of this pattern in the near future for a fall look.  So stick around to see that.  A big hug and 'thanks!' to Jared for helping me with the photos.
