If you don't already browse the Quilting subreddit on Reddit.com you really should. It's a great community that is extremely helpful and creative. I have picked up so many tips, tricks and ideas and it's so much fun to share your works in progress and get constructive feedback. This block is one that Stitchandbitch posted as an idea for a way to use scraps. She was kind enough to provide step-by-step directions for the block and I had to share it with you.
I've been saving my smaller scraps and cutting them into 6" x 3.25" rectangles. I am supplementing them with an equal number of solid white rectangles.
I made a slight adjustment to Stitchandbitch's original directions. Doing it this way was just more accurate for me personally. Constructing the block is a 4-step process.
- Sew a patterned rectangle to a solid triangle down the long side with a .25" seam allowance. Iron open. Repeat with other pieces.
- Lay two of the sewn and ironed squares on top of each other, rights sides facing each other (as shown above) with the pattern on top of the solid.
- Cut from corner to corner with a rotary cutter through both blocks.
- Sew down the long edge of the triangle with a .25" seam allowance on each of the stacks you made and iron open.
It's super easy. I'm making blocks slowly as I work on other projects and have scraps that would normally get tossed or lost in my scrap box. Eventually when I have enough blocks I'll piece them together and finish the quilt.
One of the best things about this block is the variety of looks you can get by laying them out in different configurations. Here are 4 different variations...
The chevron pattern looks great quilted the way Stitchandbitch finished her baby quilt. It is like a modified hounds tooth. The "broken square" layout is kind of a play on a traditional quilt pattern. I'm always drawn to random quilts. I love the way this block looks randomized. I think it would look very modern finished with an allover free motion pebble pattern.
Let me know if you give this block a try. With different patterns and colors this could have a totally different look and feel.

That is gorgeous. Your whole blog is gorgeous, I love your design!
ReplyDeleteI also wish I had more patience for sewing. I hadn't done it in 10 years and did so this week to make a camera bag and oh man I hated it lol. I need more practice.
Thank you! A camera bag is a very ambitious project! Quilting is great for practice. Lots of repetition and straight lines. Let me know if you ever need pattern recommendations.
Deletethese are so lovely!
ReplyDeleteThank you! It was fun to play with all the possible ways to lay them out.
